Redcar and Cleveland Town Deal, Public Realm
CR Reynolds was named Principal Contractor for the Redcar and Cleveland Town Deal project. The scope of the works was to upgrade and improve an existing pedestrianised High Street. The purpose of the scheme was to create a more vibrant High Street that could be used for multi-purpose events. The works included installing site hoarding to the designated work areas and removing the existing clay block paving within the designed extents. New water and electric infrastructure were installed, along with in-ground power and water units to support event use and future flexibility. The high street environment was enhanced through the installation of new street lighting columns and lanterns, together with new signage to improve localised lighting levels and the overall aesthetic. Public realm finishes were upgraded with new granite and limestone set paving, including etched limestone sets featuring a poem by a local poet, coloured bituminous surfaces, new street furniture, and bespoke concrete planters with illuminated lighting and soft landscaping.
Project work elements included:
- Replaced approximately 2,800m² of clay block paving with natural granite and limestone setts
- Renewed 58m³ of highway foundation affected by historic utility damage.
- 26 new lamp columns with LED lanterns, new feeder pillars to increase capacity, and six LED uplighters to illuminate the Grade II listed Redcar Town Clock.
- Delivered about 330m of non-potable water supply for street cleaning, five in-ground event power units, and approximately 220m of 150mm electrical ducting to serve the units and provide spare capacity.
- Bespoke illuminated concrete planters with soft landscaping, new trees and bins
- 3.6m wide benches, increasing seating to 104.
- Interfaces with the adjacent events space build & day to day trading were managed through regular coordination, weekly business liaison and tightly controlled early morning deliveries, including maintaining overnight delivery access to Boots.
- Each phase was closed out before hoarding removal to minimise defects
- Our supply chain was used to increase illumination levels by around 30% using low energy LED lanterns.
- Value engineering workshops supported best value decisions for paving, street furniture.
The Project Works
Early Contractor Involvement was used to reduce construction risk and protect the High Street trading environment, close collaboration with Southern Green to develop a phased methodology ensured access for businesses, traders and the public. Value engineering workshops supported best value decisions for paving, street furniture, and our supply chain was used to increase illumination levels by around 30% using low energy LED lanterns. Progress and potential impacts were communicated throughout the works with the public liaison officer. Construction works replaced approximately 2,800m² of clay block paving with natural granite and limestone setts and renewed 58m³ of highway foundation affected by historic utility damage.
