• Partial removal of the existing walkway structure

Stakeholders
Due to the extremely busy nature of Durham Station, it was essential that our dedicated Rail Project Delivery Team collaborated closely with our Client and local stakeholders throughout the project. Ensuring public safety at all times was our absolute priority. We subsequently developed a detailed Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan.

These collaboratively prepared documents were prepared and approved by our Client in sufficient time to allow works to progress safely, whilst causing minimal disruption to commuters.

Challenges and Solutions
Maintaining public and client access – As the worksite was within a live rail station underpass, minimising disruption and maintaining safe access past our worksite was of paramount importance for our Client, commuters and ourselves. The Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan was extremely effective in setting out an efficient method for maintaining access to all parts of the station throughout the works. Our collaborative approach to safe planning of work, prior to and during the construction phase, included designing and maintaining a safe temporary walkway through the underpass. This ensured that minimal delays were experienced by commuters, whilst their safety was ensured at all times.

Result
Through excellent communication with our client, we successfully delivered a very unique and eye-catching solution to this ambitious project. All works were completed in a timely manner and came within budget, much to the delight of our Client. Whilst retaining commuter access throughout by designing and implementing a temporary walkway, our Rail Project Delivery Team provided an innovative solution. We were delighted to be able to deliver this exciting project.
