Valley Bridge Maintenance Painting Works

Our Client, North Yorkshire County Council, required us to carry out unique maintenance painting on the entirety of the underside of the famous Valley Bridge, Scarborough. This was an extensive and complex operation, entailing numerous scaffold structures that had to be erected carefully.

Action

  • We carefully erected numerous complex scaffold structures, and hung them from the underside of the bridge
  • Installation of safety netting underneath the scaffolding, and access stairs from the ground
  • Blast works on the structure to remove all existing paint from the bridge in preparation for painting scheme
  • Specialist painting across the whole underside of the bridge

Stakeholders
Valley Bridge is one of Scarborough’s most prominent landmarks, and consequently it was crucial that we liaised with local stakeholders from contract award. We worked closely with our Client and stakeholders to ensure that concerns were listened to. We took great care to ensure that our site was safe and unnecessary, excess noise was kept to a minimum.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Subcontractors failing to fulfil commitments – The scaffolders that we initially subcontracted to fundamentally failed to complete their contracted works, despite their respected status as a scaffolding contractor. We had to adapt promptly, quickly finding an effective and high quality solution through a new subcontractor. We went above and beyond to alleviate delays, and the works were completed in a timely fashion

Challenges and Solutions (continued)

  • Steelwork Repairs – The need for significant steelwork repairs on the underside of the bridge was not evident until after the existing paint had been blasted off. We reacted proactively by carrying out the steelworks ourselves, and ensuring that it was safe to continue with the project
  • Guano on existing surfaces – On the existing surfaces on the underside of the bridge there was a significant amount of guano present. Due to its hazardous nature, we cleared and disposed of it quickly and efficiently in liaison with our client, thus preventing any danger to members of the public

Result
Through effective planning, we completed the works within budget, in spite of the numerous challenges that we encountered throughout the project. We adapted to the problems that we encountered efficiently, to deliver a high quality and resource efficient solution.

The Difference We Made
These works helped bring one of Scarborough’s most iconic landmarks back to life, with a much needed lift. Our collaborative approach with stakeholders on this challenging project ensured the safety of the public throughout the works.
