Middlesex Road, Carriageway Improvements
CR Reynolds Ltd were appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver essential infrastructure upgrades on Middlesex Road, Hull. The scheme was undertaken within a phased traffic management system to minimise disruption and maintain access to adjacent properties. The project aimed to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and upgrade surface water management, while ensuring long-term durability of the road network.
Action
- Road widening to increase capacity and improve traffic flow.
- Renewal of kerbs and footpaths.
- Targeted structural repairs to the rigid carriageway.
- Full resurfacing of the carriageway.
- Installation of new traffic calming measures, including speed ramps.
- Relocation of existing street lighting columns.
- Comprehensive drainage improvements.
- Installation of tactile crossing points and a new traffic island on Salthouse Road.
The Project Works
Works commenced with the planing off of the existing surface to expose the underlying concrete carriageway. This enabled detailed inspection of the base and identification of sections requiring repair.
Defective areas of concrete were carefully excavated, stabilised with blinding concrete, and reconstructed using dowelled, reinforced concrete at 300mm centres to restore strength and durability.
In parallel, the road widening programme was delivered through reinforced concrete construction, ensuring compliance with design specifications and providing capacity for future demand.
Drainage and Surface Water Management
Surface water management was a key focus of the project. Over 90 gullies were installed, removed, or adjusted as part of the works. New gullies were connected into the existing system, creating an upgraded drainage network to efficiently manage rainfall and the increased surface water owing to enhancement of the catchment area.
Kerb and Footpath Enhancements
Approximately 1,000m of new kerbs were installed, including double-kerb detailing to accommodate level changes associated with road widening and realignment. Existing footpaths were also excavated and reconstructed, providing pedestrians with a safe and durable new walking surface.
Result
The project was delivered ahead of programme and produced a high quality, defect free finish to the standards of our client and the adopting authority Hull City Council. The finished project earned recognition from the Hull Civic Society owing to the “excellent completion of works on Middlesex Road.
The Difference We Made
The scheme successfully delivered a safer, more efficient corridor through Middlesex Road, enhancing both vehicular and pedestrian movement. The combination of structural repairs, traffic calming, and improved drainage ensures long-term resilience of the route, while minimising disruption to local residents and businesses during construction.
