The Cleggford Bridge works won the CECA (Yorkshire and Humberside) Contract of the Year Award in 2010 and was highly recommended in the 2011 Concrete Society Awards. C R Reynolds were awarded the Contract Works to strengthen the Grade 2 listed, 5 span masonry arch bridge over the River Calder. In addition works included scour protection around the existing bridge piers.

Originally built in 1778, the Cleggford Bridge on the River Calder in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, is a local iconic representation of Georgian British architecture. With the presence of such architectural elements as hammer dressed masonry and ashlar dressings around the arches, and the addition of a Victorian cast iron parapet dating from 1889, the five span sandstone ashlar facing Bridge has been Grade 2 listed by the Government Office Secretary of State.

With an increasing volume of traffic using the Bridge it was essential for alterations to be made in order to alleviate the stresses of modern day transport acting upon the structure.

To ease any logistical disruptions a temporary footbridge was constructed parallel to the existing bridge. This allowed the main bridge to be closed entirely and the works to be carried out at an accelerated rate whilst maintaining safe public access.

The Grade 2 listing of the Bridge invited particular planning conditions imposed by the English Heritage. C R Reynolds maintained close liaisons with English Heritage throughout the course of the project in order to successfully complete the scheme without comprising the original features of the structure. A great deal of attention was given to the organisation and implementation of craftsmanship in accordance with the English Heritage conditions, desires and aspirations. The works were undertaken utilising various traditional construction techniques and materials ensuring the consistency of the finished product with the surrounding area and landscape.
