Stakeholders

Key stakeholders included the public, local businesses, Environment Agency, and The Crown Estate.

Works and traffic management were phased carefully to minimise disruption to pedestrians and maintain traffic flow around the town centre.

We liaised with the local shopping centre, businesses, residents, and other affected building occupiers prior to commencing works and throughout. This was achieved through letter-drops, advanced warning signage, and daily on site discussion. In addition, we provided key updates and progress information to the client’s communications team for updating the community via local media.

Due to works being undertaken over and around the River Freshney, we collaborated closely with the Environment Agency to develop working methodologies to obtain a Bespoke Flood Risk Activity Permit, and a licence from The Crown Estate to install a temporary cofferdam.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the most significant challenges to project delivery was the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. We worked proactively to implement government guidance and develop in-house procedures to ensure works could continue safely. In addition, we re-phased elements of the work at short notice due COVID-19 affecting global supplies of specified granite paving and kerbs.

There was very limited information as-built information available regarding the existing footbridge. Therefore, early design and build elements for the footbridge were based on our site surveys. Resulting in late changes to methodology and temporary works.

Result

This vital project for the development of Grimsby town centre was delivered to a high quality, within project budget and timescale.

The Difference We Made

Installation of a modern footbridge structure to help connect areas of the town, together with various public realm improvements to revitalise the Freshney waterfront area and make it more attractive for residents and visitors.
