47 weeks

Our Client required an experienced Principal Contractor to complete the construction of a new turnkey single storey maintenance depot on their existing site in Kettering. In addition, the project also included an extension to the adjacent Kettering Railway Station public carpark.

Action

  • On-site material sampling
  • Site decontamination and clearance
  • New carpark construction including associated drainage, ducting, kerbing, lighting, and barrier system.
  • Turnkey construction of a new single storey maintenance depot building
  • New service yard and staff carpark
  • New portal frame external storage buildings
  • New remote operated access gates, boundary fencing and lighting

Stakeholders

Stakeholder management was critical due to the works being located within an operational depot and adjacent to a busy railway station. We engaged with our Client at an early stage to develop and agree phasing to minimise disruption and maintain safe access/ egress for Network Rail staff and the public throughout the construction phase.

Whilst on site, we facilitated daily communications with the Client and the various future building occupiers to ensure that the facility met their operational requirements and expectations.

Challenges and Solutions

The key challenges on this project included safe disposal of contaminated material and working around the public and Network Rail operations.

During initial site surveying and sampling, it was found that waste stockpiles on site contained asbestos. CR Reynolds Limited worked in close collaboration with the Client and specialist supply chain to develop  safe system of work to remove and dispose of the contaminated material, including HSE notification and provision of on-site air monitoring.

Thanks to the careful phasing of the works and continual communication with key stakeholders and Network Rail project management, we were able to maintain safe, undisturbed access to the public carpark and existing depot during the construction phase, whilst still maintaining productivity and programme.

Result

We successfully completed the project on time, within budget, and to a high quality standard, with excellent feedback received by our client on completion.

The Difference We Made

Construction of a new purpose built maintenance depot which will provide a base for Network Rail maintenance staff to work from for years to come. In addition, we provided much needed increased capacity for members of the public using Kettering Railway Station.
